Escrick Park Celebrating History - 350th Birthday Celebration

By Helen Pentith  //  Wed 30th January 2019

So, on the 6th December we did just that and held a fantastic evening in the parkland close to the Estate Office in a very sizable marquee, provided by Malton Marquees.  Under the careful hands of Peter Laird, the interior of the tent was transformed into a drama befitting a film set, which wowed guests as they arrived!

The evening celebrated not only 350 years of ownership in the Forbes Adam Family, but also all the individuals who had assisted, both past and present, in the developing of the Estate through the ages, with the oldest guest outside the family being the former ploughman from the Estate who worked on the farm from the early 1950’s - to our youngest apprentice Dan, who recently joined the Estate aged 16.

Contractors, advisors, the Estate team and associates were all present to help celebrate the evening, as well as the family members, including Nigel Forbes Adam, now 89 and proprietor of the Estate from 1960 to 1992 before handing over the reins to his son Charlie.

Charlie Forbes Adam and his family welcomed all the guests personally and, once everyone had gathered, provided a short speech touching on the history of the Estate ownership under the Forbes Adam family and the changes that have occurred over the centuries, this is all highlighted on our Welcome page on our website.

Charlie Forbes Adam has been responsible in modernising the Estate over the past 30 years to transform this into the thriving business and community it is today!  Escrick Park has seen many changes over the centuries, especially in farming and the changes that occurred during the agricultural revolution in the 1700s. The Estate employees once numbered 120 which included a busy saw mill and huge agricultural team. Indeed in the Census of 1891 stated that there were 27 domestic staff!

Before dinner, a thoughtful and poignant Grace was said by Sir Reverend Timothy Forbes Adam, uncle to Charles Forbes Adam who has recently celebrated is own 96th Birthday.  Guests then enjoyed a superb supper on long banquet tables, the tasty Estate-reared Hebridean hogget was served, expertly cooked and presented by Kings Catering Company

The thought of a ceilidh probably worried some of the guests, but with a little persuasion and some excellent direction and superb music from The Jacobites most of the guests hit the dance floor almost immediately and remained twirling there for the rest of the evening!

350 Years is definitely a celebratory milestone, this celebration gave us all time to reflect on the past and be thankful for the future and the wonderful space that is provided by Escrick Park for all those who live and work and play there.

May it continue in the safe hands of the Forbes Adam family for many centuries to come.
