Escrick Park Rideways: getting horse and rider ready for event season

By Helen Pentith  //  Mon 16th May 2016

Event season is fast approaching, with the fine weather of summer tempting horse and rider out of hiding to make the most of the picturesque English countryside. If you want to get as much as possible out of event season this year, then it’s important to make sure that your horse is in prime condition ahead of time. The Escrick Park Rideways is the perfect place to put your horse through its paces and hone your own skills for a packed event calendar.

The Escrick Park Rideways

Escrick Park is the perfect place to build the stamina of both horse and rider for the show jumping and event season. The Rideways is a 6.5-mile loop comprised of 50 challenging cross country fences, giving your horse the chance to stretch its legs amidst the stunning Yorkshire countryside – ideal for any training regime. The course is open from dawn until dusk every day, so you can dodge the crowds and turn up at a time that’s convenient for you. Riders can choose between affordable £20 day membership and £125 annual membership options to make the most of our excellent facilities.

Rideways is now in its 23rd year, and we’ve continued to improve and develop the course over the years – providing a good variety of obstacles to reward every horse and rider. The course is set in beautiful ancient woodland, and the scenery is especially stunning at this time of year – with the first flush of new green on the trees and a carpet of bluebells on the woodland floor. The route is virtually traffic-free and all jumps are optional, providing the perfect alternative to nervous horses or riders in search of more relaxed hacking. You can also enjoy an additional 20 miles of hacking around the Escrick Park Estate – ideal for endurance riders looking to maximise their time in the saddle.

The York & Ainsty Hunt Showcross Event

The best way to discover Escrick Park Rideways is to enter into one of the many events running in the park throughout the year. Coming up on the 5th of June is the York and Ainsty Hunt Showcross Event, which is open to all provided that pre-entry is arranged with the event organisers ahead of time. The York and Ainsty Hunt Showcross Event accepts riders from novice level (where jumps are restricted to 18” only) through to Intermediate class (with jumps up to 3’ in height) and also features a pairs category, too.

If you’ve yet to visit the Escrick Park Rideways then now is the perfect time to do so. Contact us today to find out more about the York and Ainsty Hunt Showcross Event, or consider investing in an annual Rideways pass to give you horse the ideal year-round workout. You can find images and testimonials from Rideways members and visitors on our Facebook page, as well as on our website.
