Four awesome autumn activities!

By Helen Pentith  //  Thu 26th October 2017

Summer might have well and truly come to an end, but that doesn’t mean the outdoor fun has to stop! If anything, the countryside is even more beautiful and fun to explore during the autumn. The colours of the trees are changing to wonderful browns, yellows and reds, and glorious frosty mornings are met by stunning dark orange sunsets. There’s no reason why you can’t pop on a pair of wellies, zip up your waterproof jacket and take to the great outdoors to enjoy it and partake in some family fun! With half term approaching, why not whisk your family away for a few fun-filled days in the Yorkshire countryside, where you can explore a great wealth of wildlife and nature? You could create your own secret hideaway in your Hollicarrs Lodge at Escrick Park, warm and cosy after a day of running, walking and riding. Sound ideal? Here are just some of the awesome autumn activities you could get up to while you were there...

Go on a treasure hunt

There’s nothing more exciting and guaranteed to get the whole family involved than creating your own adventure. Arrange the treasure hunt of a lifetime, and lead your family on a journey through Esrick Park’s fascinating woodland, following your own clever clues in search of treasure. Not only will it keep the kids active and away from the television this half term, but it will help to exercise their minds and bring the family together too. With 250 acres of the historic estate to discover along permissible footpaths, you could make a great day of it!

Go horse riding

Whether it’s something you and your family have done before, or something you’d like everyone to try, you can enjoy a day of horse riding with the whole family at Escrick Park, with courses suitable for both beginners and intermediates. There are several tracks to follow that you can choose from, and if you are quite experienced, you could even try a few of the trickier off-road courses. Travelling by horse is a fantastic way to explore the grounds and a hobby you can all continue to enjoy when you’re back home. Watch the sunset on horseback together in the evening, or while away the afternoon, weaving in-between trees and meeting wildlife along the way. There are Riding Stables close to Escrick.

Go on a bike ride

At Escrick Park, we provide bicycles for hire so that you and your family can take in the scenery at your own pace. You could enjoy a journey in search of wildlife, or cycle into one of the nearby towns for a day of shopping or dining out. There are a range of restaurants surrounding Escrick Park that come highly recommended, only a short bike ride away, so why not take the scenic route by bike and treat yourselves to a feast at the end of a well-earned ride? Whether you’re in the mood for a rustic Italian, or a light afternoon tea, you’ll find it at one of the surrounding locations.

Go in search of history

The Escrick Park Estate is surrounded by a number of castles, museums and ancient ruins to explore. You could spend the day marvelling at the treasures within Castle Howard, or learn a thing or two in the bird garden at Harewood. You’ll find Bolton Abbey in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, on the banks of the River Wharfe, where you can discover the ruins of the Priory and spend the day wandering along the riverside and along the moorland paths. Why not pop to the Yorkshire Air museum and learn of what life was like during the war? Whether you are seeking a day of adventure or education, you’ll find you can do both in Yorkshire, as it boasts such rich, historical heritage.

Having a rural bolt hole is perfect for taking the family away during the holidays to a new and more exciting environment can provide you with the time you need to relax and escape for your busy life. Escrick Park can offer you both a calm and quiet weekend, or an energetic, action-packed few days, it’s simply up to you to decide which you would prefer.
