The Benefits of a Second Home for Holidaying

Owning a second home in the country can have real benefits and ensure you get ample time away with the family or simply to use as a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of a busy working life. There are basic starting blocks to consider before you begin your search, here are few suggestions from us.


Consider being only an hour or two driveaway, so you can visit more often and enjoy the full benefits of your second home.  Also, being close to major road network is obviously an advantage, but you also need to be far enough from these routes not to have any traffic noise either.  Do you wish to be in the rural countryside or a town or village location?  What attractions do you have around the area, restaurants, places to visit, infrastructure and entertainment?


Of course, we all worry about security of our homes, making sure you have someone to keep an eye on your home during your absences is important, so whether you have a neighbour or friend who can help, or there are management agents who offer this service too.  The advantage of a holiday park is that there are always security systems in place and a warden that keep a watch on your empty home while you are away.


You may have great DIY skills but having to do odd jobs during your downtime can be a pain.  Having a local reserve of contractors who you can trust could make all the difference. Having the job fixed while you are not in the property, so there is no disturbance to your quality time.  If you can get someone else to deal with this burden, then that is an added bonus!


These need to be comfortable but basic, furnishing a second home can be fun and also done in a completely difference style to a regular home.  Exploring with colourway and keeping the emphasis on comfort is a must in order to relax fully, so large squashy sofas and floor cushions, and essentially, a comfy bed to lay your head.  The benefit of owning your own place does mean that you can leave all your personal items in the home, including bedding, towels, clothing, wellies and anything else you require while holidaying.

When considering your location, you may want to simply stay put and totally relax without having the get in the car.  Local nature trails and woodland walks are great to discover.  Wandering into the local village or town is also perfect for finding delicious food and drink.  Cycle paths and public footpaths close to your holiday home location will help in getting you to where you want to be, without using the car.
