The Great Outdoors - Bridging the Gap

By Helen Pentith  //  Tue 7th May 2019

Charlie Forbes Adam, former Chairman of the Bridges Fundraising Advisory Group, invited a group of 12 men to enjoy the great outdoors at Escrick Park with a camping expedition in the woodlands, complete with cooking over a campfire and course fishing in the lake at the Hollicarrs Holiday Park nearby.

The Bridges is the only residential drug and alcohol treatment facility in the UK specifically designed for offenders and have developed working practices and partnerships that are unique in this field. Successfully treating men from all parts of the country, many with complex needs. All treatment episodes are tailored to the individual and work collaboratively with the probation service to best deliver a structured programme of treatment with a clear pathway to rehabilitation and community re-integration.

The trip was organised and lead by Jason George, Business Development Support at The Bridges who said “the men here at The Bridges really enjoyed their two days at Escrick it is such calming and peaceful place to be and fantastic woodlands. The men found the experience really therapeutic as they were able to let their hair down a little and be more themselves.  The group told stories around the campfire and particularly enjoyed playing the game “Room 101” where, as a group, we debated certain issues and decided as a collective team whether we put them into Room 101 or not. We also felt the 2 day experience brought us all closer together as a group for both staff and clients.

The guys really enjoyed the fishing at Escrick catching a number of fish, some of which were big carp.  The men here at The Bridges mainly come from quite troubled backgrounds and to have an opportunity to be in serene environment is really beneficial to their wellbeing, mental health and just to have the opportunity to try a new experience”.

The Bridges have proven track record that this type of group activity aids with breaking of the mode of re offending and helps men to gain confidence to build a new life.  Of all clients who complete the programmes at Bridges, 76% had not relapsed or reoffended within a year of completion.

Charlie Forbes Adam was delighted to be able to offer this experience to the group and all appreciated his generosity.
