Variety is the spice of life

By Pete Meadows  //  Tue 22nd January 2019

The first four months of my working life at Escrick have flown by in a whirlwind of wedding fever, wildlife discovery and a wonderful array of property developments.

Moving up from Sussex, I was keen to take on a role that was, by its very nature, as diverse as the environment that the estate encompasses. Coming from a background in farming, I was keen to be a part of an estate whose core values lie in the rural sectors. Keep reading to see why Escrick is that place.

Events

With the new year in full swing we are already looking forward to the events coming up in the park this year. Some returning favourites including the Escrick 10K, the Yorkshire Pudding Rally and the Classic Volks field of dreams, to name but a few. As well as this we have a whole host of exciting weddings & civil ceremonies, to bring colour and life to the park across the summer months.

Agriculture

All the while the farmers and local contractors are busy across a range of winter agricultural tasks. Hedge cutting is a key priority at this time of year, as it helps to create the perfect nesting sites for a host of wildlife in the spring. Not only this, but it is vital that hedges remain dense at the base, thus acting as wildlife corridors (or mini motorways) for the creatures so important to the diversity of our countryside. The rams have had their fun for the year, and since been removed from the flock of Hebridean ewes, so fingers crossed we will have an abundance of spring lambs by April.

Rideways

With the relatively mild and dry weather we have been having to date, the Rideways track is looking great, and all jumps are still open. A strategy of jump maintenance is currently being undertaken, with both repairs to existing jumps and several new jumps being installed around the course.

So, what will 2019 hold in store?

There are a number of exciting new projects in the pipeline across all elements of the Estate and it will be fascinating to see how these develop over the coming months. We will be sure to keep you posted, so make sure you are following us on our social media pages to keep up to date:

With everything we have going on, it would seem that; if variety is the spice of life, then Escrick must be full of flavour!
